Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is a lot like Taylor Swift. Either you love it or you hate it. I've heard many people, since the great month of February began, complaining about the holiday and others gushing over the fabulous time their going to have their significant other. Person 1: "Aren't you so excited? It's finally February, which means Valentine's Day!!" Person 2: "Yes, I just love having the fact that I'm single pointed out to me by a national holiday!"

I should preface this post by saying that I am single. I don't have a boyfriend, a fiance, a husband, an "it's complicated" person, a lover, a friend with benefits, nothing. But, I love Valentine's Day. Before you jump to conclusions and close out of this article with disgust, let me explain.

Ever since I was little, Valentine's Day has been one of my favorite holidays. Sure, I love all the pink, the fact that my Dad still buys me chocolate covered strawberries, and the day-after chocolate sale that ensues. More than all of that that, though, I love that we have a holiday to celebrate love.

For me Valentine's Day has always meant a chance to be with friends and family and to celebrate the bond that we have. It is a day when we can reflect and be thankful for the wonderful people in our life who do love us. It is also a day where we can reflect on the great and passionate love that our heavenly father has for us.

1 John 4:19 it says, "We love because He first loved us." Before anyone else felt anything towards us, God loved us. And before we can love anyone else, genuinly and truly love someone, we must first love Him.

This Valentine's Day, whether you're single or otherwise attached, I challenge you to reflect the love that Christ has for you. Bask in its fullness and completeness and then go and love others because you first were loved!
